AQL standard
Apparel typically uses AQL 2.5 (general) or AQL 1.0 (premium). The four killers: color difference (batch & dye-lot), shrinkage, dye-lot variation, and silent fabric substitution.

The apparel calendar has traps in every quarter.

Tariffs, de minimis, and PNTR all in flux
- From Feb 2026, a 10% temporary tariff on global imports under §122 of the Trade Act of 1974 (in effect through Jul 24, 2026).
- The under-$800 de minimis exemption has ended — direct-mail cross-border models now carry far higher cost.
- PNTR risk: USITC is studying revocation of China's permanent normal trade relations — a potential broad tariff hike.
- March 2026: USTR opened two §301 investigations (overcapacity, forced labor).

Defense: pick mills with EIA credentials; avoid eco-sensitive windows (major political meetings).
Silent fabric substitution

Defense: mark yarn spec on the seal sample; send bulk samples for lab testing.
Dye-lot color variation
Different production batches come back in visibly different shades.
Defense: require one dye vat per order, or pre-agree an acceptable color tolerance.
Post-holiday worker churn

It depends on your product. Fast-turn or complex styles point to Guangdong in the Pearl River Delta; fabric development to Keqiao in Shaoxing, the world's largest fabric market; and basic cotton knits to Shandong or Henan. Matching the right belt to the product is the first cost decision you make.
Ask for a pattern room and an end-of-line QC station; assemblers and traders rarely have both. Trading companies typically add a 10–30% margin and front multiple factories, so confirm the actual production site, ideally through a Mandarin phone check or an on-site visit, before you commit a deposit.
For the EU, REACH and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 restrict chemicals such as azo dyes and formaldehyde. For the US, CPSIA governs children's wear and 16 CFR covers flammability. Most EU and US buyers also expect a BSCI or Sedex social-compliance audit, and your trims must pass the same tests as your fabric.
Fabric is the largest line at roughly 40–50% of unit cost, followed by cut-make-trim at 15–25%, dyeing and finishing at 10–15%, trims at 5–10%, and overhead plus margin at 10–15%. Fabric pricing is fairly transparent, so the real negotiation room sits in the processing fees.
The four recurring killers are color difference between batches, excess shrinkage, dye-lot variation, and silent fabric substitution, where cheaper yarn replaces your approved sample. Under-weight fabric, labeled 220g but actually 180g, is the most common hidden defect, because it quietly protects the factory's margin at your expense.
Standard production runs 25–60 days, while fast-return networks compress this to 10–15 days at a premium. Plan bulk orders 60–90 days ahead, and never place them in the month before Chinese New Year, when capacity collapses and post-holiday quality stays unstable for two to three weeks.
In 2026 the US has a temporary 10% tariff in effect through July 24, the under-$800 de minimis exemption has ended, and a possible PNTR revocation is under study. Mexico added a 35% finished-textile tariff that closes that nearshoring route. Forward FX locks and pre-locked fabric cost reduce the exposure.
